What struck me first about this picture was its subject. Not in the sense of a grand theme but literally the person in the picture. I found myself viewing her as I would someone in a casual snapshot. I was immediately interested in the person. There is little sense of place. It cannot be avoided that the picture was taken by a Photographer as part of an Oeuvre, and so the person is likely acting, to a degree, as a Model. But who is the person and what can be learned (felt?) of her from such a portrait? There is something of the noble peasant, a haughty gaze mixed with unkept long hair. She challenges the camera with her face while her body covers itself. Even a model's stock of camera poses are characteristic and revealing some way. There is a nakedness about her. The bare, slightly folded shoulder, is naked more felt than seen in the searing light. The parted lips, the tugged open fastening at the waist, offer chinks in the armor, invitations for the spirit bold enough. Finally, her treble-covered breasts and glinting eyes surrender the obscene cascade of hair, so rich with earthy promise. I check the dictionary for synonyms to 'earthy': folksy, simple, coarse, bawdy, hard-boiled, lusty, natural, pragmatic, ribald, robust, rough, uninhibited. Yes, all of that. All of that is promised in the fall of hair from the ever-so-bare shoulder.

Snapshots are snaps of subjects but art builds images, shaping their content from purpose and design. The tools of its artifice are the elements of light, form, texture, color, composition, framing, lens, touch,...The individual style of the artist is added to enhance the response of the viewer to the subject. The viewer then completes the circuit of expression. From this well-known view of art, what do we see from this artist? The picture fits well in the oeuvre sharing the subject of single females, powerful looking and attractive. Also shared, is the aggressive use of contrast. In particular there is use overexposure to get a sense of light as an active element. It devours details and attacks the eye. This then reduces the sensuous 'resolution', so to speak, to emphasize certain elements. In the case of this image, the tactility of the hair, the hard glint of the eyes, or the way the dissolving line of the shoulder forces the viewer to feel as much as see its gesture. There is also a edgy, irreverence toward the craft of camera technique. The shot could pass as a badly exposed amateur shot. Which may have induced my initial response,... my immediate fleshy need to know this girl.
